On Thursday, October 15, 2026, Nymeo will join credit unions around the world in celebrating the 78th anniversary of International Credit Union Day! This annual celebration recognizes the important role credit unions play in helping people achieve their financial goals, supporting local communities and making financial services more accessible.
At the heart of every credit union is a simple philosophy: People Helping People!
A Little Credit Union History
The credit union movement began more than 160 years ago with the idea that people could come together, pool their resources and help one another achieve greater financial stability.
The first rural credit union was established in Germany in 1864 by Friedrich Raiffeisen. The movement eventually reached the United States in 1909, and the Federal Credit Union Act of 1934 helped expand access to federally chartered credit unions nationwide.
While credit unions have evolved considerably since then, their original purpose remains the same: helping members improve their financial well-being.
What Makes Credit Unions Different?
Unlike traditional banks, credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives owned by their members.
That means their focus is on serving members rather than generating profits for outside shareholders. Credit unions offer many of the same financial products and services as banks, including checking accounts, savings accounts, loans, mortgages and digital banking.
But what makes them different is their member-focused approach, which can include competitive rates, fewer fees, personalized service and a strong commitment to the communities they serve.

Nymeo: Proudly Serving Members Since 1933
Nymeo has been helping members build stronger financial futures since 1933. Over the years, we've grown, expanded into new communities and introduced new products and services to meet our members' changing needs. But one thing hasn't changed: our commitment to putting members first.
Whether we're helping someone open their first checking account, purchase a home, manage their finances or build a business, our goal is to make banking easier and help our members succeed. We're equally proud of our commitment to giving back through financial education, volunteerism and partnerships with local organizations.
