International Credit Union Day is on Thursday, October 16th, 2025. This annual celebration honors the cooperative spirit that sets credit unions apart—people helping people. It’s a reminder that when communities come together, everyone benefits.

The Credit Union Movement
Credit unions were born out of a simple but powerful idea: people pooling their money to support one another. The first official credit union started in Germany in the 1800s, and by the early 1900s, the movement had reached the United States. In 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Federal Credit Union Act, officially recognizing credit unions as not-for-profit cooperatives built to serve their members.
Over the years, credit unions expanded their services, gained deposit insurance, and became a trusted financial partner for millions of people. Today, more than 140 million Americans belong to a credit union—proof that the cooperative model continues to thrive.
The Nymeo Story
Nymeo’s roots stretch back to 1933, when a group of employees came together to create a financial resource for their colleagues. From those humble beginnings, we’ve grown into a community-based credit union proudly serving members across Frederick and Montgomery Counties.
While our name has changed over the years, our purpose has never wavered: to provide affordable, member-focused financial services while strengthening the communities we serve. The name “Nymeo” itself is an anagram for “money,” and it reflects the creativity and innovation that guide us.

Why Credit Unions Matter
International Credit Union Day isn’t just about looking back—it’s about looking forward. Credit unions like Nymeo exist because of you, our members. Every loan, savings account, and debit card swipe helps keep our cooperative strong and reinvests back into our local communities.
So, as we celebrate this year, we want to say thank you. Thank you for being part of Nymeo’s story, for trusting us with your financial journey, and for proving that when people work together, incredible things can happen.
