Senior Living Options: What You and Your Family Should Know October 7, 2026

Scammers are constantly changing their tactics—and some are becoming surprisingly bold.

A scam may begin with a phone call, text, or email that appears to come from your financial institution. The person may claim there is suspicious activity on your account and offer to help protect your money. They may even know personal information about you, making the situation seem legitimate.

In some cases, scammers are actually taking things a step further by sending someone to a person’s home to collect a debit or credit card, claiming the card has been compromised and needs to be replaced or destroyed!

Aging in Place

For many people, the first choice is to remain in their current home for as long as possible—often called aging in place.

Staying home offers familiarity and independence, but it's important to think ahead. Will the home remain easy to navigate? Who will handle maintenance? Is transportation available? Could home modifications or additional assistance eventually be needed?

The financial picture matters, too. Even a home without a mortgage can have ongoing costs for taxes, insurance, utilities, maintenance and repairs.

Independent Living

Independent living communities are generally designed for older adults who can live independently but want fewer home-maintenance responsibilities and greater access to amenities and social activities.

Depending on the community, services may include dining, transportation, housekeeping, fitness programs and organized activities.

Communities With Multiple Levels of Care

Some senior living communities offer several levels of care in one setting. A resident might begin with independent living and have access to additional services or care if their needs change. These arrangements can provide continuity, but the costs and contracts can be more complex. Understanding entrance fees, monthly costs, included services and future care options is important before making a decision.

How Do You Choose the Right Senior Living Option?

Start with the person—not the community. You don't need to have all the answers today. The important thing is to start exploring your options before a decision becomes urgent. Planning ahead gives you and your family more time to understand what's available, compare costs and make choices based on what matters most.
